IN LONG TERM CARE
Assisted
Living Facilities
In addition to the services provided in independent living retirement housing,
these facilities provide personal care assistance to residents. In addition
to housekeeping services, residents receive assistance in managing their medications
and a helping hand with bathing, grooming and dressing. Assisted living facilities
may range from three or more older people in a home-like setting to large numbers
of residents in an institutional/residential environment. Assisted living residents
customarily need assistance with two to three of the activities of daily living
(bathing, dressing, toileting, continence, transfering, eating). In Hawaii,
the primary type of assisted living facility that has developed is the Care
Home. Type II Care Homes provide a home-like setting and personal care assistance
to over six residents. Some Type II Care Homes provide a residence and care
to as many of 65 residents. Type I Care Homes provide the same level of services
to 4 or 5 residents in a family residential setting.
